Representing types of Adam/Eve
- Tarzan (1999)
- Tarzan and Jane. (See review
at Hollywood Jesus)
- The Matrix (1999)
- As well as being rather like John the
Baptist , Morpheus is also representative of everyman. He is one who
knows that the world needs a saviour, and that he cannot save the world
himself . "The people who sat in darkness have seen a great
light". Morpheus in some way represents the whole human race ,
crying out for and believing in Neo. Eventually Neo has to make the
choice to sacrifice himself in order to free Morpheus (the human race),
as he cannot free himself . This raises the idea of looking at John the
Baptist as an everyman figure also. (Anne Gordon)
- The Truman Show (1998)
- Truman as "True Man" in Paradise (See review
at Hollywood Jesus.)
- Entire story can be seen as a parallel to the Garden of
Eden story. He "sins" in terms of "The Producers"
(departs from the script) and leaves the controlled but perfect world to
start on his journey in the unknown.
- City of Angels (1998)
- Maggie and Seth buy
pears - Seth tastes life as a human and gives up his eternal life (see
review at Hollywood
Jesus)
- Jerry Maguire (1996)
- On a homily for marriage and in particular
the subject of the Creation story in Geneis and Adam's nuptial song to
Eve 'You are at last bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh.' The theme
being that Adam found no satisfaction from any of creation but was
complete in the creation of woman. In the movie Jerry Maguire (Tom
Cruise), is in love with an unmarried mother Renee Zellwegger and he is
trying to explain his love for her. They meet a deaf couple in the
elevator and they are signing. Zellegger can understand sign language
and Cruise asks her what they said and they had signed You complete me
an echo of the love sentiments of Adam to Eve. (Patrick Boyle)
- Fearless
(1993)
- Max, an air crash survivor goes with an old girl friend
to a pancake house and eats strawberries, which he is allergic to. He calls
them the forbidden fruit. He goes on through most of the film acting as
though he is invulnerable and able to save others (Remember the fruit in
Eden would "make you like God.") Later the same fruit bring the experience
of death. (Darrel Manson, Artesia Christian Church,
