 | From the Geneva Notes.
 | "God does not show himself to
man in his majesty but according as man's capacity to comprehend
him, that is, by visible signs as John the Baptist saw the Holy
Spirit in the form of a dove." |
|
 | From
Matthew Henry's
Commentary.
 | "This vision is explained, john
12:41 , that Isaiah now saw Christ's glory, and spake of Him,
which is a full proof that our Saviour is God." |
|
 | From Wesley's Notes.
 | "Holy - This is repeated
thrice, to intimate the Trinity of persons united in the Divine
essence." |
|
 | "The
Leafless Tree; Isaiah 6:13," Charles H. Spurgeon, 1857. |
 | From the Commentary on the Whole Bible
(Jamieson, Fausset and Brown, 1871).
 | "Isaiah is outside, near the
altar in front of the temple. The doors are supposed to open, and
the veil hiding the Holy of Holies to be withdrawn, unfolding to his
view a vision of God represented as an Eastern monarch, attended by
seraphim as His ministers of state (1Ki
22:19), and with a robe and flowing train (a badge of dignity in
the East), which filled the temple. This assertion that he had seen
God was, according to tradition (not sanctioned by Isa
1:1), the pretext for sawing him asunder in Manasseh's reign (Heb
11:37). Visions often occur in the other prophets: in Isaiah
there is only this one, and it is marked by characteristic clearness
and simplicity." |

unexpected and can come in many different ways and situations. Sometimes
we try to ignore it especially when we see the action required as too
difficult, but the spirit of God will keep on reminding and prodding us." |

 | "...the prophet’s response to God’s
call draws him into a complex web of words of judgment (critique of
individuals and society) and words of hope, of standing firm in faith. And
the latter will only finally be realised among the valleys of the shadow
of death." |

C5 - Exegetical Notes on Isaiah 6:1-8," Douglas MacCallum
Lindsay Judisch, Concordia Theological Seminary (LCMS - Indiana).
 | "As a layman Isaiah would have
been outside the temple proper, but from the courtyard dominated by
the immense altar of burnt-offering he would have been quite capable
of up seeing into the holy place (as opposed to the holy of holies)
when its massive doors of carved cypress overlaid with gold were
folded back (1 Kings 6: 34-35) [H.G. Stigers, ZPEB, V, 625 and 629a,
in 622a-656b]. Such would be the case especially if he were standing
or kneeling just before the steps leading up to the open porch.
Thus, the way in which he speaks specifically, in verse 4, of the
shaking of "the foundations of the thresholds" indicates a
point of view from the outside of the temple through its porch and
open doorway." |

"Called to Change," Darrell Jodock, The Christian Century, 1995.
 | "A God this high and lofty cannot be
domesticated into an American God or a capitalist God or a God who
protects the "good guys" from the bad. The holy God brings us up short,
jars us into self-recognition and beckons us to a radical reorientation of
our individual, social and religious priorities. Without this turning,
this repentance, we will not be ready for the changes that are to come." |

ruined!' There is no need to tell them they are sinners, for their meeting
with 'the Lord Almighty' in the gospel of Christ does all the exposing
necessary." |

Holy and the Sacred," Paul S. Minear, Yale Divinity School. Theology

 | "The sacred is found wherever
religion is found; the holy wherever God is present. Accordingly, it
is quite possible to consider many things as sacred but nothing as
holy, or equally possible to treat many things as holy but nothing
as sacred. Everything depends on the concept of God. Of the two
terms, theistic religions view the holy as primary, the sacred as
secondary." |

way to embodying the wholeness of the gospel through mastering the
craft of forgiveness." |
