bulletFrom the Geneva Notes.
bullet"God does not show himself to man in his majesty but according as man's capacity to comprehend him, that is, by visible signs as John the Baptist saw the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove."
bulletFrom Matthew Henry's Commentary.
bullet"This vision is explained, john 12:41 , that Isaiah now saw Christ's glory, and spake of Him, which is a full proof that our Saviour is God."
bulletFrom Wesley's Notes.
bullet"Holy - This is repeated thrice, to intimate the Trinity of persons united in the Divine essence."
bullet"The Leafless Tree; Isaiah 6:13," Charles H. Spurgeon, 1857.
bulletFrom the Commentary on the Whole Bible (Jamieson, Fausset and Brown, 1871).
bullet"Isaiah is outside, near the altar in front of the temple. The doors are supposed to open, and the veil hiding the Holy of Holies to be withdrawn, unfolding to his view a vision of God represented as an Eastern monarch, attended by seraphim as His ministers of state (1Ki 22:19), and with a robe and flowing train (a badge of dignity in the East), which filled the temple. This assertion that he had seen God was, according to tradition (not sanctioned by Isa 1:1), the pretext for sawing him asunder in Manasseh's reign (Heb 11:37). Visions often occur in the other prophets: in Isaiah there is only this one, and it is marked by characteristic clearness and simplicity."
bulletContemporary Commentary, Studies and Exegesis:
bullet Isaiah 6:1-8, (9-13), Proper 5C, Comments (commentary) and Clippings (technical notes for in-depth study), Chris Haslam, Anglican Diocese of Montreal.
bullet Isaiah 6:1-8, (9-13), Commentary, Background, Insights from Literary Structure, Theological Message, Ways to Present the Text. Anna Grant-Henderson, Uniting Church in Australia.
bullet"A call upon a person's life is often unexpected and can come in many different ways and situations. Sometimes we try to ignore it especially when we see the action required as too difficult, but the spirit of God will keep on reminding and prodding us."
bullet Isaiah 6:1-8, (9-13), The Old Testament Readings: Weekly Comments on the Revised Common Lectionary, Howard Wallace Audrey Schindler, Morag Logan, Paul Tonson, Lorraine Parkinson, Theological Hall of the Uniting Church, Melbourne, Australia.
bullet"...the prophet’s response to God’s call draws him into a complex web of words of judgment (critique of individuals and society) and words of hope, of standing firm in faith. And the latter will only finally be realised among the valleys of the shadow of death."
bullet Isaiah 6:1-8 (9-13), Studies on Old Testament texts from Series C, Ralph W. Klein, Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago.
bullet 5 Epiphany, Year C: Isaiah 6:1-13, Biblische Ausbildung, Dr. Stephen L. Cook, Virginia Theological Seminary.
bullet"We must learn to understand this judgment as an opportunity to truly know ourselves as sinners. We must accept this judgment, ultimately, as an expression of God's grace."
bullet Kairos CoMotion Lectionary Discussion, Isaiah 6:1-8, Wesley White. "A place of conversation regarding Progressive Christianity."
bullet"Remember a time your guilt was removed. Apply that to a current guilt. Go ahead."
bullet "Overloading the Senses," Expository Essay, Isaiah 6, Dr. William R. Long. Part 2.
bullet"Take time to cultivate the senses--if, that is, you want to hear and see things that you never have witnessed before."
bullet"Epiphany C5 - Exegetical Notes on Isaiah 6:1-8," Douglas MacCallum Lindsay Judisch, Concordia Theological Seminary (LCMS - Indiana).
bullet"As a layman Isaiah would have been outside the temple proper, but from the courtyard dominated by the immense altar of burnt-offering he would have been quite capable of up seeing into the holy place (as opposed to the holy of holies) when its massive doors of carved cypress overlaid with gold were folded back (1 Kings 6: 34-35) [H.G. Stigers, ZPEB, V, 625 and 629a, in 622a-656b]. Such would be the case especially if he were standing or kneeling just before the steps leading up to the open porch. Thus, the way in which he speaks specifically, in verse 4, of the shaking of "the foundations of the thresholds" indicates a point of view from the outside of the temple through its porch and open doorway."
bullet "Called to Change," Darrell Jodock, The Christian Century, 1995.
bullet"A God this high and lofty cannot be domesticated into an American God or a capitalist God or a God who protects the "good guys" from the bad. The holy God brings us up short, jars us into self-recognition and beckons us to a radical reorientation of our individual, social and religious priorities. Without this turning, this repentance, we will not be ready for the changes that are to come."
bullet "Seraphim's Cry, Prophet's Commission," Carin Ruff, "Proclaiming Gospel Justice: Reflections on the Scriptures and Progressive Spirituality," The Witness, 2006.
bullet Haftarat Parshat Yitro - Yeshayahu 6:1-13, Menachem Leibtag, Tanach Study Center.
bullet "The Call of Isaiah," Larry Broding's Word-Sunday.Com: A Catholic Resource for This Sunday's Gospel.
bullet"We are called to be God's witnesses, by what we see in our world and by what we do in our world. Seeing God's power requires prayer; doing God's will requires honesty and purpose."
bullet "Isaiah's Commission," Rev. Bryan Findlayson, Lectionary Bible Studies and Sermons, Pumpkin Cottage Ministry Resources.
bullet"When the majesty of the living God is 'set forth', there will always be the person who cries, 'Woe to me! I am ruined!' There is no need to tell them they are sinners, for their meeting with 'the Lord Almighty' in the gospel of Christ does all the exposing necessary."
bulletIsaiah 6:1-8, Trinity B, Comments (commentary) and Clippings (technical notes for in-depth study), Chris Haslam, Anglican Diocese of Montreal.
bullet Isaiah 6:1-8, (Trinity, 2006), The Old Testament Readings: Weekly Comments on the Revised Common Lectionary, Howard Wallace Audrey Schindler, Morag Logan, Paul Tonson, Lorraine Parkinson, Theological Hall of the Uniting Church, Melbourne, Australia.
bullet"Between the prophet’s vision and sense of unworthiness, and his final gesture of readiness to go forth for God, stands a wondrous act of forgiveness."
bullet Isaiah 6:1-8, Studies on Old Testament texts from Series B, Ralph W. Klein, Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago.

bullet"Indeed, the greatest measure of ministry is not how successful we've been but how we've dealt with failure. Perhaps we've focused too much on the expectation of glory in ministry and not enough on the experience of what ministry really can be."

bullet"Crown Weaving in the Celestial Household," The Midrash. From Jewish Heritage Online Magazine's Topic of the Month: Crown.
bullet "The Holy and the Sacred," Paul S. Minear, Yale Divinity School. Theology Today, 1990.
bullet"The sacred is found wherever religion is found; the holy wherever God is present. Accordingly, it is quite possible to consider many things as sacred but nothing as holy, or equally possible to treat many things as holy but nothing as sacred. Everything depends on the concept of God. Of the two terms, theistic religions view the holy as primary, the sacred as secondary."
bullet "The Craft of Forgiveness," L. Gregory Jones, Loyola College. Theology Today, October, 1993.
bullet"If, and insofar as, Christians are able to recognize that forgiveness is a way of life rather than a simple word to assuage guilt, then we will be on our way to embodying the wholeness of the gospel through mastering the craft of forgiveness."
