Rashi's Commentary, c. 1075. chabad.org. |
 | From the Geneva Notes.
 | "A reverent face and love for
God is the first beginning to keeping God's commandments." |
|
 | From
Matthew Henry's
Commentary.
 | "The fear of God in the heart
will be the most powerful principle of obedience. It is highly
desirable that not we only, but our children, and our children's
children, may fear the Lord. Religion and righteousness advance and
secure the prosperity of any people." |
|
 | From
Wesley's
Notes.
 | "He is One; therefore our
hearts must be united in his love. And the whole stream of our
affections must run toward Him. O that this love of God may be shed
abroad in our hearts." |
|
 | From the
Commentary on the Whole Bible
(Jamieson, Fausset and Brown, 1871).
 | "The grand design of all the
institutions prescribed to Israel was to form a religious people,
whose national character should be distinguished by that fear of the
Lord their God which would ensure their divine observance of His
worship and their steadfast obedience to His will." |

 | "In the Massoretic Text
the importance of Deuteronomy 6:4 among the Jews is emphasized by the
two letters which are larger than the norm. These are the final letters
of the first and last words of the verse, which is to say the ayinof
shma' and the daleth of 'echad. Deuteronomy 6:4 may be called the
foundation of the catena of pentateuchal verses which takes its name
from the initial word of this verse, the Shema, as it is usually spelled
in English." |

 | "Covenanting,"
by Prof. Eliezer Segal,
University of Calgary.
 | "The fact that the Biblical
covenant was established with a particular community, sharing
a common ancestry and history, thus comes across as a perfectly
natural phenomenon. In a country that is terrified by the prospects
of regionalism and fragmentation, we might derive some consolation
from the recognition that humans have a natural predilection for
identifying with social units of a limited size, and that when I
locate myself spiritually within one particular community this does
imply a rejection of the validity of other communities, any more
than my devotion to my own family demands that I despise all other
families. Au contraire: Surely it is only through the love of
spouse, family and community that we can hope to arrive at the
ability to feel love for humanity "as a whole."" |

 | "We want to tell our children the ancient stories
of promise, deliverance, human failure, and divine forgiveness and
fidelity so that they, too, may come to 'love the Lord with all
their heart, soul, and strength.' But just how do we go about
imparting to them a deep knowledge of Scripture? |

also experience the stress of mobility concerns, lack of control, and
boundary intrusions. Are there basic lessons that clergy families could
learn from the child therapy movement that could help manage these
stresses and support healthy families? Could elements of appropriate
emotional availability, active participation in the child’s play,
recognition of child resilience, limit setting, and filial therapy be a
beginning place for clergy families to learn from child therapy?" |
