Dark City (1998)

  • Information at Internet Movie Database
  • Roger Ebert Review, Chicago Sun Times
  • Hollywood Jesus Visual Review
  • Looking Closer, review by Jeffrey Overstreet, "searching for truth, beauty and meaning in the movies."
  • Review, Steve Lansingh, TheFilmForum: Christian Conversation about the Movies.
  • Themes
    • Alternate Reality
      • Reality changes daily as "memories" are implanted into people's minds by The Strangers.
    • Apocalyptic
      • [Dark City] tells the story of a man who literally wakes up to discover he has no memories, that he  doesn't know who he is.  He lives in a gloomy city controlled by a bunch of creepy guys in long leather coats.  It sound silly but it is really very good.  The final scenes depict an apocalyptic showdown between the hero and the Strangers and then the city appears, floating in space and wreathed in light.  There is a strong influence by apocalyptic literature, especially Revelations. ( Mike Clark, Hamilton, Canada)
    • Baptism
      • John emerges from his bath at the beginning of the movie. The Strangers do not like light or water.
    • Call
      • John answers a phone call at the beginning of the movie. The call is from Dr. Schreber who tells John about what is happening, and warns John to escape from The Strangers.
    • Crucifixion
    • Prophet
      • John is "born" into hotel room #614. John 6:14 is about a prophet coming into the world. John ends up saving the world from eternal darkness and the manipulation of The Strangers.
    • Resurrection
      • John escapes from the Time Cross and battles the forces of Evil. (see review at Hollywood Jesus)
    • Satan/Demons
      • The Strangers do not like light or water.
    • Seeing/Seeing Anew
      • The city is dark until John battles the forces of evil. Then eternal darkness is lifted and light returns to the world.
    • Spiritual Battle/Warfare
      • John's battle with The Strangers is also a battle within himself. (see review at Hollywood Jesus)
