Hebrews 9:24-28
- Reading the Text:
- Historical References, Commentary and
Comparative Texts:
-
II.III.5,
First Prinicples (De Principiis),
Origen. (c.225)
-
Statement of Faith,
Athanasius of
Alexandria, c. 330.
- From the Geneva Notes.
- "Another twofold comparison:
the Levitical high priest entered into the sanctuary, which was made
indeed by the commandment of God, but yet with men's hands, that it
might be a pattern of another more excellent, that is, of the
heavenly place, but Christ entered into heaven itself. Again he
appeared before the ark, but Christ before God the Father
himself."
- From
Matthew Henry's
Commentary.
- "As no wisdom, learning,
virtue, wealth, or power, can keep one of the human race from death,
so nothing can deliver a sinner from being condemned at the day of
judgment, except the atoning sacrifice of Christ; nor will one be
saved from eternal punishment who despises or neglects this great
salvation. The believer knows that his Redeemer liveth, and that he
shall see him. Here is the faith and patience of the church, of all
sincere believers."
- From Wesley's Notes.
- "The sacrifice of Christ
divides the whole age or duration of the world into two parts, and
extends its virtue backward and forward, from this middle point
wherein they meet to abolish both the guilt and power of sin."
- From the
Commentary on the Whole Bible
(Jamieson, Fausset and Brown, 1871).
- ""It is enough that Jesus
should show Himself for us to the Father: the sight of Jesus
satisfied God in our behalf. He brings before the face of God no
offering which has exhausted itself, and, as only sufficing for a
time, needs renewal; but He himself is in person, by virtue of the
eternal Spirit, that is, the imperishable life of His person, now
and for ever freed from death, our eternally present offering before
God" [DELITZSCH in ALFORD]."
- From
The People's
New Testament, B.W. Johnson, 1891.
- "All the saints who desire his
appearing; to them he shall appear a second time, at his second
advent, sinless and the mighty Savior. He becomes a sin offering but
once, and appears the second time without a sin offering, because he
hath done the work once and forever."
- Contemporary Commentary, Studies, and Exegesis:
-
"First
Thoughts on Year B Epistle Passages in the Lectionary:
Pentecost 23," William
Loader, Murdoch University, Uniting Church in Australia.
- "This passage forms part of the
author's explanation and argument about Christ having done all that was
necessary for all time so that people may know they are forgiven and can
look confidently toward completing the journey to salvation."
